THIS IS NO COMPUTER ERROR: TROY STATE 258, DEVRY 141

correction

College Basketball -- In stories Sunday and Monday about Troy State's 258-141 victory over DeVry Institute of Atlanta, the Associated Press reported that DeVry is a computer school. The institute is an accredited school that officers bachelor's degrees and programs in electronic engineering technology, business operations, electronic technology, accounting and computer information systems. TROY, ALA., JAN. 12 -- Troy State eclipsed its NCAA scoring record today, averaging more than six points a minute in a 258-141 victory over DeVry Institute -- the first time any NCAA team scored more than 200 points.

"This is unimaginable," Coach Don Maestri said. "I don't ever see it happening again. . . . It's hard to believe it happened even one time."

The Division II Trojans turned in a record-setting performance for the second year in a row against DeVry, an Atlanta computer college and NAIA Division II member.

Last year Troy State beat DeVry by 187-116, setting NCAA marks for all divisions for most points in a game by one team and most points in a half (103). It didn't take long for those records to fall today.

The Trojans (13-3) led 123-53 at halftime. They eclipsed 187 points on Chris Gresham's three-pointer midway through the second half.

"It's a great feeling knowing we're a part of history -- probably forever, or at least for a long time," said junior forward Terry McCord, who led the Trojans with 41 points.

Another record was set for most points (399), bettering the 331 in Loyola Marymount's 181-150 victory over U.S. International in 1989.

"This is the best kind of style," McCord said. "You have a lot of freedom, you don't have to worry about a lot of plays being run. You shoot whenever you think you've got a shot."

He added with a chuckle: "You don't necessarily have to have a shot. Just think you've got a shot."

Troy State had plenty of those against the Hoyas (3-16), going 102 of 190 (54.7 percent) from the field, including 51 for 109 from three-point range. Only three of Troy State's points came on free throws. DeVry got no free throws.

DeVry didn't mind too much.

"This is the most fun I've had all season," team captain Clayton Jones said.
